The South Florida Hunter Jumper Association was originally named FHJA and founded in 1959. FHJA encompassed all of the state of Florida. During the late 60’s or early 70’s the geographical divide occurred. Today there is SFHJA,  NFHJA, CFHJA and FSHJA. There are other associations and clubs but these are the largest that stem from the original FHJA. The division occurred because we are a large state and it was not feasible to include everyone from all parts of the state to be active in the original organization. As independent groups, we can better serve our members and the horses.

The first trophy was awarded 50 years ago in 1958, The Christopher Wadsworth Memorial Trophy. “To be awarded to the junior rider who has shown the most improvement... whose manner, punctuality, and attitude... enable to accept defeat as graciously as victory.” The list of winners read like a who’s who of local and national  stars. This year’s recipient will have the honor of being the 50th name on the trophy.

Today SFHJA awards close to 50 yearend trophies for all levels. There are 15 Charity Show Trophies and 4 Medal Finals. Needless to say we have grown.

SFHJA started on the grassy fields of old Florida and now sanction shows from the small farm show to some of the finest venues in the world that are provided here in our own back yard. And, SFHJA is committed to our own shows to be welcoming to all levels within our geographical area. We are constantly striving to better ourselves, to be more inclusive and accessible to everyone, in every area, no matter how small or new. Our goal is simple and grounded to our grass roots. SFHJA shall provide and further the education of horsemanship. We encourage and provide a forum for good sportsmanship and charitable works. We will further the skills and knowledge of all things pertaining to hunting and jumping horses.
